Between the hectic schedule of my work life today I recieved a call which said ” Eid mubarak saar” !! I was really surprised ! The he explained who he is . I suddenly realiszed that I was wandering around Jama Mosque of Srirangapattana with Ram , my good friend this time of last year. We exchanged couple of wishes he wished my family and friends and I did the same before he finished. The slowly I started memorizing the events of that day I was in Jama Mosque.
I knew the next day is Eid so I wanted to explore some happenings in this Mosque . IF you follow the link you will find this Mosque is historically great too. The architecture is just brilliant and it was freshly painted yellow for the festival.As I started exploring the possibilities of photographing on the Eid day I met this gentlemen who helped to talk to the main priests. They were really happy but told me not to go inside on the festival day which is not allowed. I was more than happy to see the activities and getting couple of photos is just a ice cream on top of it .
So I was there around 4pm with my friend and was welcomed by huge crowd inside. As we entered the Mosque everyone was looking at us due to our funny dresses which was very unusual against a traditional muslim festival dress. But soom we started to become one of them and after one hour I was really became friends with few. They explained their beliefs and stories behind it .The free Sharbat ( juice) we had was wonderful and it left very sweet memories. And here are the photos I took on that day.
This story is part of my ongoing project ” Folk practices of Karnataka” from years. There is a need of visual documentation of these practices as most of the practices are either dying or changing due to modern metamorphosis . I am not in the favor of starting a debate whether these practices are good or bad and it is not up to my current knowledge . So please consider this body of work as photo-documentation of the practices.

ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಲೇಖನಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಛಾಯಾಚಿತ್ರಗಳು ನನ್ನ ” ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಜನಪದ ಆಚರಣೆಗಳು” ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರಾಜೆಕ್ಟ್ ನ ಭಾಗಗಳಾಗಿವೆ. ಶತಮಾನಗಳಿಂದ ಆಚರಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಈ ನಶಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಚಿತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿಡಿದಿಡುವ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನವನ್ನು ಕಳೆದ ಎರಡು ವರುಶಗಳಿಂದ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ . ಈ ಆಚರಣೆಗಳು ಸರಿಯೋ ತಪ್ಪೋ ಎನ್ನುವುದನ್ನು ಸಾರುವ ಉದ್ದೇಶ ನನ್ನದಲ್ಲ. ಅಲ್ಲದೇ ಅದು ನನ್ನ ಸದ್ಯದ ತಿಳುವಳಿಕೆಗೆ ಎಟುಕದ ವಿಷಯ. ಓದುಗರು ದಯವಿಟ್ಟು ಈ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನವನ್ನು ಆಚರಣೆಗಳ ಪರ ಹಾಗು ವಿರೋಧದ ಚರ್ಚೆಯಾಗಿ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳದೆ ಇವುಗಳ ದೃಶ್ಯದಾಖಲೆಯಾಗಿ ಪರಿಗಣಿಸಬೇಕು ಎಂಬುದು ನನ್ನ ವಿನಂತಿ.
