A westerner friend of mine used to comment , on a lighter note of course , ” Your lunch plate looks like shit all over the place” . I would helplessly laugh but that never bothered me at all. In fact I thought he is right!! Our South Indian lunch plate definitely looks like “shit all over the place” when compared visually with a typical American Lunch or an Italian dinner plate. On a badly shaped ( differently shaped as well ) banana leaf everything is ‘thrown’ in an unorganized manner with no real care about ‘presentation ‘ or ‘visual appeal’. Everything is fluid , sticky and sometime rushes out of the plate creating a “shit all over the place ” effect. A first time India visiting Canadian lady almost puked when she saw my wife eating curd rice! But we don’t give a damn about the appearance. We just love our lunch. It is hard to explain why due to diversity.
So I decided to deconstruct some of the best lunch I had. I will start with Gore (pronounced as Gorè) Mutt Lunch. Situated on top of a small laterite rock hill , Gore Mutt, spiritual place with nearly hundred years of history , is probably the second place after my old house in Maneer where I spent my precious moments of childhood. Even today Gore mutt is like a second home to my family. I never miss having lunch here for its divine-ness and heavenly taste. Any spiritual or religious event ends here with a free lunch. People sit together in the dining hall chanting holy verses till the entire lunch is ready to eat. Once the lunch plate is ready the head priest commences the ritual of praying to god and announces the start of the lunch.
So here is a highlight of the entire lunch for you. More to come in this series.
