Peanut fair of Bangalore is a perfect example of morphed version of a typical village used-to-be fair . More and more people thong every season replacing every available space in Basavangudi streets of Bangalore on the fair days . So are the vendors pile up on the streets on this three day event out of which most of them are not at all selling anything related to peanuts ! Once it used to be the the peanut growers who used to offer their first crop of groudnuts to the god and then sell to the people. But there are no more growers coming to the fair but all are vendors who buy from the local market and sell. So this is a fair with
Cultures and people keep change over time and fittest survives ;Now what is striking in this fair at present is the riot of colors during nights and the activity around them. When evening leaves a dull blue and red on sky the green lights make the black polluted trees to parrot green .Traditional gas lights make the groundnut piles orange while neon street lights bring blues and yellows everywhere. Then you have lights coming from the decorative lights, lights from those mini amusement park area which are fitted with multicolored lights bring confusion of lights . The whole arena looks as if a rainbow just crashed in the fair! People never observe these and continue their activity without knowing how beautiful they are looking. There are joy, fear , fun, cry , care ,wonder everywhere ! There are boredom, hunger, pain,faith,love,young,old every now and then! A package for a keen observer for colors and emotion and show runs on!

This story is part of my ongoing project ” Folk practices of Karnataka” from years. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಲೇಖನಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಛಾಯಾಚಿತ್ರಗಳು ನನ್ನ ” ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಜನಪದ ಆಚರಣೆಗಳು” ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರಾಜೆಕ್ಟ್ ನ ಭಾಗಗಳಾಗಿವೆ. ಶತಮಾನಗಳಿಂದ ಆಚರಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಈ ನಶಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಚಿತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿಡಿದಿಡುವ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನವನ್ನು ಕಳೆದ ಎರಡು ವರುಶಗಳಿಂದ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ . ಈ ಆಚರಣೆಗಳು ಸರಿಯೋ ತಪ್ಪೋ ಎನ್ನುವುದನ್ನು ಸಾರುವ ಉದ್ದೇಶ ನನ್ನದಲ್ಲ. ಅಲ್ಲದೇ ಅದು ನನ್ನ ಸದ್ಯದ ತಿಳುವಳಿಕೆಗೆ ಎಟುಕದ ವಿಷಯ. ಓದುಗರು ದಯವಿಟ್ಟು ಈ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನವನ್ನು ಆಚರಣೆಗಳ ಪರ ಹಾಗು ವಿರೋಧದ ಚರ್ಚೆಯಾಗಿ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳದೆ ಇವುಗಳ ದೃಶ್ಯದಾಖಲೆಯಾಗಿ ಪರಿಗಣಿಸಬೇಕು ಎಂಬುದು ನನ್ನ ವಿನಂತಿ.
